To Quartz or Not to Quartz: Picking Countertops for Your Kitchen Renovation

To Quartz or Not to Quartz: Picking Countertops for Your Kitchen Renovation

Through the years there have been many “trendy” options for kitchen countertops when completing a kitchen renovation. For a long time granite countertops were all the rage – but a more affordable option has taken over as the top choice: Quartz Countertops.

But what may consumers don’t realize is that Quartz countertops are not actually made of quartz. Many of the options you are seeing available are actually man-made countertops. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing BUT it is good to be educated prior to purchasing your countertop material for your kitchen renovation.

What is Quartz?

Quartz is a natural stone much like granite, limestone, quartzite, and marble. A major component of many types of rock and very abundant in certain igneous rocks. It appears as clear to grey or even white lumpy blobs and is comprised mostly of silicate-rich or felsic igneous rocks.

What is Man-Made Quartz?

Quartz countertops are formed by combining around 90 percent ground quartz with eight to 10 percent resins, polymers, and pigments to form a very hard granite-like surface.

Geologically speaking, a manmade quartz countertop is not pure natural quartz. The only thing that fits that criterion is quartzite, which truly is pure natural quartz. Manufactured quartz surfaces are mostly quartz, but they are not purely quartz.

What are the Benefits of Quartz Countertops?

Quartz provides many amazing benefits to homeowners completing a kitchen renovation. From style options, ease of use when cooking, and cleanliness – let’s take a look at some of the top reasons to consider Quartz countertops.

Style Options:

Quartz is a great option if you want your countertops to have an even and consistent appearance. Quartz can mimic the look of other stones so if you love the look of granite or marble, but prefer the quartz advantages, you can get both with quartz. You can also find quartz counters in virtually any color you’d like. So no matter the color story of your home, you’ll be able to find a quartz countertop to match your aesthetic.

Heat Resistant:

Quartz countertops are extremely heat resistant. During the countertop’s fabrication process, the quartz slab is cured at temperatures of about 180 degrees Fahrenheit. You won’t have to worry about heat or burn marks being left behind while handling hot pots and pans.

Low Maintenance

Quartz finishes are non-porous, making it a very low-maintenance material that is easy to clean. This also helps the surface to resist bacteria building up.  And because the material is man-made, it is engineered to be durable, scratch-resistant, and long-lasting. Quartz’s non-porous nature makes it an ideal countertop choice for both the kitchen and the bathroom.
