5 Reasons We Love Screened Porches

Recently we completed a screened porch project and it reminded us of all the reasons we love this easy way to add more space to your home and enjoy the weather without all having to mess with bug spray or sunscreen. If you have been considering adding some living space to your home but don’t want to do a complete home addition, you may want to consider a screened porch.

Here are 5 reasons why we love them and we think you will too:

1. A little bit indoors a little bit outside.

A screened porch is a lot like that old Donny & Marie song (did we date ourselves?) – a little bit of the best parts of both outdoor and indoor living. You can hear the birds chirp, feel the breeze and breathe in that fresh air. But you also are protected from sun, rain, and other outdoor hazards. Feel the breeze, smell the rain, watch the fireflies, listen to the night sounds. You can enjoy it all from your cozy screened porch, the original outdoor room.

2. Create a Stylish Space

Have you ever been away from your home for dinner or a night out when the weather suddenly shifts and then you realize “oh no! I left the patio cushions out!” Unlike a patio or deck, you don’t have to worry about purchasing cushions or furniture that won’t get ruined in the rain or blow away in a storm. Because screened porches are protected from the elements, you can make them even more comfortable and attractive than areas that are fully exposed to sun, wind, and rain.

3. No More Bugs

Outdoor seating has one big (or small) problem: bugs. Whether it is gnats coming for your burger and potato salad or mosquitos biting at your skin, these critters can ruin any outdoor gathering. A screened porch lets you step outside for some fresh air without having to coat yourself in bug spray. Screens also help keep unwanted insects and wildlife off your porch.

4. A Different View for Working from Home

With more and more people working from home these days, sometimes you want a change of scenery or to enjoy a lovely day. But, if you have ever tried to work in direct sunlight with a laptop, you know that it can easily overheat and sometimes it is difficult to see the screen. A screened porch is a great alternative to be able to enjoy the weather while working.

5. Add Value to Your Home

Adding a screened porch to your home is less expensive than putting a traditional addition to your home. But, attractive outdoor spaces add a lot of appeal to potential home buyers. A screened porch can help home buyers envision their family enjoying that space together. It can also make your home feel bigger when as buyers will see the added space to spread out. Home buyers are also drawn to attractive outdoor spaces with electricity, lighting, and other amenities.
