You did it! You successfully raised a child who has now gone off to college. Now what? You walk by their empty bedroom everyday and wonder what you could do with all this extra space. While some parents like to maintain a bedroom for their adult children… some parents see it as an opportunity for making upgrades for their newly empty nest.
If you are the latter, we have three ideas for how you can renovate an empty bedroom!
1. Expand an Adjacent Room
Now that you have an empty nest, you may want to make it more spacious and luxurious. It’s relatively simple to knock out a wall to combine two bedrooms into one space. You can combine two rooms to create an impressive master bedroom suite featuring a big bedroom, spacious closets and a roomy master bath. If possible and you have the space, you may want to consider creating a vaulted ceiling at the same time you remove a wall to combine two rooms.
2. Install a Walk-In Closet
Older homes typically only included small closet space in their original designs, which can make storage tricky. One consideration for that empty bedroom is to turn it into storage – and a walk-in closet at that. Turning a rarely-used room into a wardrobe storage space will allow you to transform a bedroom bursting at the seams into a serene retreat.
To turn your bedroom into a walk-in closet, you will want to talk to a contractor and designer who specializes in fitted furniture, to customize the space to your needs. They will be able to survey the room, talk to you about what you need to store and come up with solutions tailored to your needs, making sure that every inch of space is put to good use, including alcoves and sloping ceilings. There are some stores and companies that sell ready-made closet units with fixed door sizes, adjusting the panels between them for a precise fit. But customizing a closet space is a fabulous option as the frame, doors and all the fittings will be made to measure.
3. Build a Larger Bathroom
When it comes to remodeling a bathroom, it can be easier and more economical to reconfigure an existing bathroom or remove a wall to borrow space from other rooms in the house. Even a small amount of space “borrowed” from an existing bedroom can provide enough space to significantly improve your bathroom. If your bathroom is adjacent to the newly emptied room, a bathroom remodel may be the idea project after your child moves out.
An expanded bathroom provides the opportunity to a replace a small shower stall into an elegant and modern two person shower and also add a luxurious bathtub. Move from one sink to his and her sinks and you could even install a separate toilet space or closet for privacy.
These are just three ideas for how you could renovate a newly emptied bedroom to make your home more adequate for an empty nest. You could also create a new office space, craft room, or even a small gym. Don’t let the space go unused for too long.
