Planning Ahead for Summer Shade
With the temperatures dipping, it may feel strange to think about preparing for summer, but I would like to take you on a journey to a warmer time. Imagine for a moment that it is summertime. You want to enjoy the gorgeous weather on your back patio or deck. The sun is bright, so you put up your table’s umbrella. Then, suddenly one of Nebraska’s notorious wind gusts blows through and catches on the umbrella. You scramble to make sure your dinner doesn’t fall to the ground and the table isn’t picked up by the unstable umbrella.
Instead of dealing with fabric-based shade covers that can easily be damaged by Midwest weather– it may be time to consider a more permanent solution to your shade needs. While it may seem a little premature to think about, right now is the best time to talk to a contractor about adding a cover to your patio or deck.
Before you meet with one of our contractors at Houston Remodel Service, make a checklist and plan ahead. This will be helpful as you consider your options.
- What do you want it to look like?
There are a few different options to consider:
- Would you like it to look like it was built with the house? A seamless transition between home and patio looks nice, but it is the most expensive option.
- If you would like to save a little bit of money for other projects, another option to consider would be for it to be an add-on to your home. You would be able to see the separation between the covering and your existing roof, but this would be about 2/3 the cost of a custom add-on.
- Do you want to add electricity and other elements?
You can utilize this covering to wire the space to add lighting, fans, etc. Think of how nice it would be to have some festive lighting next holiday season in a covered patio space. You can install electrical outlets which will allow for easy hanging of additional lights and create a cozy ambiance in your own yard.
- Do you want to upgrade or replace any existing structures?
Do you currently have a fabric awning that gets ripped, stained, etc. in the unpredictable Nebraska Weather? Does your cement patio need upgraded to a fashionable deck? Tired of having to make sure fabric patio furniture isn’t soaked or ruined in the rain or snow? All these problems can be solved when considering a permanent cover to your outdoor living space,
With any remodel, your first priority should be to make a space that you will use and enjoy. However, it does also add to the value of the home. A built-in shade covering will add to the value and aesthetic of your home. It almost creates another living space for when the weather is nice enough to be outside. And with the shade covering, you get the benefit of shade during the long summer days and in the spring and fall you can enjoy being outside even when it is raining.
